La Epoca - The True Soul of Salsa
La Época — The True Soul of Salsa returns on Saturday 27 June 2026 to Hotel Arena at 's-Gravesandestraat 51 in Amsterdam-Oost, next to Oosterpark. For the salsa purists among us: this is the night where 'salsa brava' isn't a genre but an experience. La Época has long been known for serving up the old, raw, honest salsa — the salsa of Fania, of the 1970s, of Hector Lavoe, Willie Colón and the Cuban classics. The line-up for this largest-ever edition is a love letter to the genre: DJ Juanpachanga spins salsa brava on vinyl (worth a night out on its own), followed by a fiery live set from the Gerardo Rosales Quinteto Latino — Venezuelan master percussionist with a band that brings the history of salsa to life on stage. A dance show by Cali Baila brings the Colombian salsa fire, and the whole night carries that unmistakable La Época vibe: old-and-new, dark, intense, dance-floor-focused. Doors at 22:00, party until 03:00. Tickets via hotelarena.nl — buy in advance, these editions sell out. For those used to modern Cuban salsa or timba: this is a different side of the genre, with more room for partner work in the classic salsa styles (Cuban casino, son, and LA alternate on the floor). Intermediate to advanced level; the music asks for dancers who recognise the old clave. Dress code: stylish. Hotel Arena invites something more elegant — a nice shirt, a dress, dance shoes. The venue is a former chapel interior and you can feel it. Getting there: tram 1, 7 or 19 (stop Oosterpark/Korte 's-Gravesandestraat), or a 10-minute cycle from the city centre. Book your ticket and come for the soul of salsa.
