What is Cuban salsa?
Cuban salsa (casino) is the social dance from Cuba. You dance in circles: lead and follow move around each other instead of along a line. The music is son and timba, driven by the clave. In group form it becomes rueda de casino — a caller shouts figures and the whole circle performs them at once.
The emphasis is on partner work, feel and play, not on shows. Many people find the Cuban basics quick to dance at a real party.
What is LA-style salsa?
LA-style salsa is linear salsa that breaks on count 1. Dancers move along an imaginary line (the “slot”), with a tight frame, explicit leads and lots of spins and shines. It's the most show-oriented salsa style, born in Los Angeles.
The key differences
| Aspect | Cuban salsa | LA-style salsa |
|---|---|---|
| Music | Son, songo and timba — clave-driven and percussive. | Commercial salsa and mambo, counted on 1. |
| Structure | Circular; lead and follow rotate around each other. | Linear; dancers swap along a straight line. |
| Connection | Playful, lots of short hand changes and impulses. | Tight frame, explicit leads, lots of turns. |
| Footwork | Compact; emphasis on figures and partner work. | Many spins and shines; visual and show-oriented. |
| For beginners | Quick to dance at a party; rueda makes it social. | Clear structure, but spins take practice. |
Which style do you learn first?
If you want to join a party quickly, start with Cuban salsa. If you love spins, choreography and performing, LA-style fits better. Many dancers end up doing both; the timing and body feel reinforce each other.
